This book has so many good things about it. It reminds me of one of my favorite books somewhat. World War Z. What I liked about WWZ were the individual stories. The same thing is happening around the world, but it is told through the eyes and experiences of different people. Another thing that I liked about this book was the psychology. I find people's disorders and their therapy fascinating. The characters stories are told by the narrator which is their therapist. This is during a group therapy project with several people that were the last surviving member of their species. The therapist's uphill battle with treating the patients and doing what is best for them is also told. The story was well paced and enjoyable. It was a long book that took me days to read which is unusual nowadays. Most everyone else is either publishing short stories or sequels with no ending. Even taking into account how long this book is, I am still sad to see these people go. The characters and their stories are what makes this book shine. Even the sample on this book is long. The sample is longer than some of the books that I've bought this year.I only have one more thing to say. I read at least 3 or 4 books a week. I own 4 bookcases that are triple stacked with books with another 700-800 on my kindle. This book is one of the best books that I have ever read. It has apocalypse, extinction of species, heartbreak, and disaster. It also has hope and healing.

The story is told from the point of view of the group's therapist, Dr. Asha Singhe. She has the Herculean task of getting each member of the group to both come to terms with what happened to them and open up to one another. Most of them are angry with the various people they blame for the annihilation of their species, and are slow to trust Asha and each other. Just like real therapy, it takes a considerable amount of time for them to reveal their secrets (not all of them are what they seem). Progress is made, but so are setbacks, and you can't help but wonder if there is any hope for this group of emotionally crippled people.
This is a very powerful and heart-wrenching story. As each member of the group gradually reveals what trauma they've experienced, you begin to sympathize with them more and more, and a number of important questions are raised. Who should be held responsible for the destruction of an entire race, and how should they be punished? When does a search for justice become mere vengeance? If you don't think anyone's going to help you, is it OK to take matters into your own hands, and if so, how far should you go?
This is not a lighthearted story by any stretch of the imagination. The horrors of what the characters have experienced are revealed in tragic detail, and more than suicide attempt is made as they try to deal with what happened to them. But even so, this is one of the most important books I have ever read. If you've got the stomach to follow along with these poor souls, I strongly recommend character-driven story. As someone who has contemplated suicide himself, I just cannot heap enough praise onto this book. Mr. Hardy has done a great service to humanity by writing it.
Note **** To all who loved this book I can only say his newest ("The Inquisitor's Progress") is even more amazing and mind-blowing.
Although this fine novel proceeds at a slow but relentless pace, Hardy has penned an almost magisterial story. Originality is a rarity in science fiction (how many zombie, alien, biotech, alien tales can we take?) but this is one for the road. A major strength of the tale is its strict editing - no cast of thousands, actions across the galaxy, intricate, complex, bewildering futuristic technology here. No, there are few players and each is brilliantly portrayed from an initial introduction to their final apotheosis.
The story is told from the point of view of the therapist who has her own secrets and problems. With little foreplay we meet the main characters and one by one we learn of their incredible journeys. Its structure and approach more closely resemble a play than a novel. Each survivor weaves captivating tales driven by guilt, helplessness, uncertainty and inability to accept their unique status.
The genius of the novel reveals itself in the subtle incorporation of a separate but related story that eventually bound the group as no counseling could ever do. It's difficult to pick a "favorite" character- the eternally angry Olivia is just as enticing as Katie/Elsbet. Especially gripping was the survivor whose healing depended on loss of religious faith. I can't say enough about this almost perfect science fiction story. My grade - A
I couldn't resist a title like this one. I had to check it out. Six varied apocalypse scenarios on six different planets, with one survivor left from each planet, forms the core of the story. I just wasn't sure that therapy sessions would make for an interesting book at all, let alone one with 600 pages. But I liked the sample, so I bought. I wanted to see this.
I was fascinated with everything in this book. The primary method for telling the story is in the therapy sessions. Each of the six people has a distinct personality and a different story, with plenty of traumas and delusions. The therapist is not perfect and has problems of her own. I liked her. This civilization has discovered how to access alternate universes and explores them in lieu of space travel. There is commerce, travel, and exploration between the universes. There are apocalypses by every type of disaster imaginable, enough that a refugee service evacuates and relocates people regularly. The planets are all Earth, by many different names, and the people are all human. That’s a simple version; the book is much more detailed and complicated, but not confusing.
Excellent world building, an even pace through the book, and several unexpected twists keep this book interesting through all 600 pages. There was nothing here that I did not like.
