Waif A fantasy short story eBook Nigel Edwards
"Waif" by Nigel Edwards is a short story that is gripping from the very beginning. Even though it starts out in the kitchen of Great House with Waif washing and scrubbing off the table in the kitchen getting it ready for Cook to prepare Young Master's dinner, there is an atmosphere of darkness, a feeling that something is going to happen and it won't be good.Waif, as described, is just that, an orphan brought to the House to serve. The other staff members, who are few, help her and teach her to perform her duties fairly patiently and she is obedient and kind.
It might sound like a sweet story but it turns into a horror story by building up the tension from the first page as Waif cleans the table and then goes on to her other duties. By the time Cook's dinner is served, it is well on its way to the ending of the story that you'd never guess.
Well-written and very enjoyable short story that I recommend to other readers.

Waif A fantasy short story eBook Nigel Edwards Reviews
I tried reading it, but I was having trouble getting hooked or understanding the setting of what was going on. A little more context would have been nice.
This short story is unusual in naming its characters according to their occupation or status we get to meet Cook, Butler, Young Master, and of course Waif - a young orphan girl who comes to work as a servant at a wealthy mansion. The peculiar naming might seem strange at first, but somehow it works well, you stop noticing it as the story flows nicely along and pulls you in.
We watch Waif as she works her daily chores, learn some of her history (not much as she does not know much of it herself). Then we see that the strange-looking Young Master seems to take some interest in her. That's when you just know trouble starts.
*Spoiler Alert*
My only disappointment comes from the fact that I'm a sucker for a happy ending. I grew to like Waif, and I wanted things to go well for her. If some scary stuff had to happen, and you kind of see it coming from the start, I at least wanted to see her through it. Perhaps she won't turn out to be a lost princess, perhaps she won't meet her true love or become rich. Perhaps someone wants to harm or even kill her. But at least I wanted her to make it through, and maybe have some kind of a reward for the trouble. Well, it doesn't happen.
I will not retract any stars for it since it's a matter of personal taste, not the quality of the writing / story. Solid 5 stars.
I enjoyed this short dark fantasy story about a young woman in a creepy castle. The author did a great job in setting the scene, which was why I was a bit disappointed by how predictable the ending was. That said, I would read more by this author, especially if the price was right.
I'd have to call it dark fantasy more than horror. That, or it's getting hard to horrify me. A nice dark Victorian atmosphere (they did call people Jem Coachman and Sally Cook) nearly as isolated as Gormenghast, with an explanation I didn't see coming. My mind spins back on its implied world, even weeks later.
A thoroughly enjoyable and quick read, well-paced and well-plotted. The author's choice to forego names heightens the sense of sadness and inevitability of each character's position. Scenes and people are described so deftly that you can easily imagine the place, the atmosphere, the longing for something more from each of them.
I enjoyed the premise of this story, enjoyed the writing and the characters, but at the end of it, I was left wishing I hadn't read it because it ended too soon. I suppose that's why I enjoy reading a series better than a standalone book, because I like to continue reading about the same characters. All in all, if you're wanting to fill a half hour, its a good read.
This short story is designed to produce an atmosphere with the characters having no name, but being defined by their work, such as cook, butler, young master, and waif. The author succeeds in both tasks, with the story having a somewhat haunting impression. The young waif is brought into the wealthy mansion of the great lady who examines the mark on her forehead and says she hopes that she is the one. After the great lady dies and waif has become somewhat older, but still quite young, waif is brought to the young master who tells her "It is my time if you are the one." This is not a vampire story, but somewhat like it and people who like vampire tales will like this one as they read and discover what the young master is, what he needs, how his household handles the matter, and what the meaning of the mark on waif's forehead is.
