I really wasn't sure about purchasing this standalone story, considering it wasn't as long and didn't revolve around the Champions and ridding the world of evil.... but I'm glad I did because it's a really great story. It lacks all the BS that had started to aggravate me about the series (the double agents upon double agents) and just has Scott and Janis solving an intriguing mystery.Product details

I will be the first to admit I am not a trivia king and while I am a child of the eighties and nineties and get a Lot of references more than a few authors I've read recently have managed to stump me. Luckily this time Brad did not, mostly owing to the fact that Cry Little Sister pops up on my Pandora quite often as Part of the List Boys soundtrack, which has a lot of favorited songs on it. Bravo Brad, Bravo, especially since this book is set before the movie came out. All in all a great addition to an excellent series so far. On to the next one!
I was really liking this series, but there has been something that has been bugging me for a while and it really came to a head in the first half of this installment.
Be forewarned, I might get into some spoilers here, but we are in the 5th book in the series, so hopefully anyone reading this review is already pretty up to speed.
The problem that I have been noticing growing as the series progresses is that Janis's powers and even non-powered development are growing rapidly, while Scott's abilities and even his insights are either not progressing or in some cases regressing. Scott's powers are kind of lame as it is, especially given the time period and what sort of computer networks are available and how often that sort of thing really comes in handy. Additionally, since he needs gear to use his offensive abilities, he is without those abilities half the time. Couple that with Janis coming off as both physically and mentally his superior even within standard human limits and Scott becomes kind of a lame character. He is wrong probably 85% of the time with his instincts while Janis is almost invariably right. This isn't limited to this installment, but it is more prevalent this time around.
I am going to complete this part of the series as this might change as the book progresses, but this is an issue that has been getting more pervasive as the series continues, so I am not sure I will stick around for books 6 and 7.
This was actually one of the better books in the series I think. It seemed to move right along since the characters had been developed in the other part of the series.
A fun diversion from the rest of the XGeneration series. I really thought I wouldn't be that interested, since the story arc of the rest of the series is so compelling. But I very much enjoyed this book.
This is a great standalone story. This one is a mystery and a salute to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. We continue to see the development of the love between Scott and Janis and how much it has grown. A tip of the hat for introducing a Kitty Pride type character. May we see more of her later.
Though it is technically a stand alone story, it only is if you have read the other books (and if you haven't, then do yourself a favor and read them). Because the story only builds on the two characters you already know (if you read the other books), otherwise their relationship and powers make no sense since there is no back story to fill you in. So is it a good read, yes. But if I hadn't read all the books before, I don't think I would have enjoyed it near as much.
Good series, well written. Nice tension and sense of mystery spread out across the novel. Nice action and set piece scenes. Nice characterization, though not overly deep, but appropriate for an action novel. Mr Magnarella is learning quick and navigating the craft well. Just started his new fantasy series and am enjoying it.
Am hoping he returns to supers at some point, I love the fantasy, but really love the supers. And its hard not to fall in love with his characters just trying to make a life for themselves.
