My father was my best friend until I was 10 years old. Thereafter, he was his worst enemy. A tough-as-nails father who firmly enforces his old-fashioned ways, a mother who has little or no say, and a son with a penchant for getting into misadventures.
The boy tries to convince his parents that something is wrong with him, and he is really physically ill. He suffers three years of humiliation, agony, and punishment from the school and his father. The school principal, gave him swats, detention and isolation, where he spent all day locked up in an empty storage room. His emotionally unstable father spanked him ferociously. The boy was also whipped shirtless with his shorts on leaving him with welts all over his body from head to toe. He suffered other cruel punishments as well. The school and his parents misjudge him almost costing him his life.

The parents get a divorce. The mother and brothers moved back to Wisconsin from Texas. They found themselves in an all-black housing project, being the only whites there for almost four years. He grows up quick and learns that life isn't as simple as black and white.

When he turns 18, he decides to move back to Texas to seek vengeance from his father in a small country town with his father and his new mother. He hasn't seen or talked to his father in almost four years. Things fall apart fast. The young man and his younger brother end up out on the streets being homeless for two months and encounters unpredictable adventures.
A raw, uncut true story.

Daddy Knows Best A Raw Uncut True Story eBook Matt Gable

This book was not perfectly written mainly due to some issues with present and past tense. There is also no "conclusion" so to speak, and I would have liked to know what became of Matt when he got older. Having said that, he really put his heart into this work, writing in a simple voice yet one that draws you in and lets you feel what he's going through. I often found myself wondering what it would be like to be in his shoes. He didn't have an easy life, and had to face prejudice from both blacks and whites because he was one of the only white guys living in "the projects". His father was not the greatest either, being pretty abusive. Matt knew what it was like to be a young man hungry and living on the streets, to experience poverty and having to deal with people judging. There are supernatural things mixed in to these memoirs as well. I don't doubt Matt did live in a couple of "haunted" houses. This book may not be a literary masterpiece, but I'm giving it 4 stars because of the heart put into it.

I feel this book was not bad. I wanted to keep reading. I am a survivor of abuse and like to read about other people's stories.
creepy story, well written from a child/teenagers point of view. recommended for teens. life can be different and still be good.
Well, i'm not quite sure what i want to say here...
Ok, i think i am going to start by saying that the story wasn't at all what i expected it to be. I have read some haunting stories about true child abuse and this was not one of them...i personally know people who have survived worse parenting than what was written about here. Not to say that this dad wasn't a complete a**hole because it sounds like he really was, and the thing with the chain like a leash taking the kid to the bus stop was abusive and its too bad someone didn't turn him in to child protective services for that!!
The story held my attention and was easy to pick back up on after i had put it down for a few days. My favorite part of the whole story was the adventures of the two brothers during their journey together after leaving Dad's house...and let me just say the woman who skipped freaked me the heck out...and then when i thought she had found you while you were alone, i was seriously scared for you and hanging on to the edge of my seat...great job!!!
Really the only truly critical thing i can say is that the grammar throughout it awful and definitely needs some editing...bad grammar/sentence structure just slows the story down as it trips up the readers eye.
Thanks for the read...on to the next )
From the very beginning this book has a little something extra, maybe it is the way the author describes the lady that drags her ankle, maybe it is the eerie encounters the main character has with a seemingly invincible rooster, but there is a little bit of something extra in this book. With a lack of interest in school, boyhood mischief, bouncing from one home to another the main character lived a life not too far off of what many today live. When his parents got divorced his life changed forever. Tossed into a world he had never experienced before, and still suffering the trials of his youth the problems had just begun. A very fast paced and easy read, great for a lazy afternoon or a day at the pool.
not a boring book at all..something happening on every page..the way it was reading i thought it was going to end in bad way..in a way it did end bad but another way it was good..very interesting
This is a true story and you can tell a lot of heart and soul went into this book. The plot is always moving and you really pulls you in and keeps your attention till the very end, it is difficult to put down. The book is chock-full of interesting characters and you can really put yourself in their position and wonder what you would do in their situation and what it must have been like. The book itself is well written and a decent size, you really get your money's worth. It's worth reading just to educate yourself on what some people have been through and how they live.
Not well written, compared to the books I usually read.
But does outline the manner in which a generation of children were treated; the parental supervision vascillated between benign neglect, and cruel punishment when the children got in the way.
There was an era when the man's 'rights' took precedent over everyone else, and God help those who got in his way.
It was amusing, but very true, that, in the end he still thought he was the one who was wronged.
Children from this sort of family grew up to become very interesting adults!
