Blackmail. Betrayal. Lust.

Just standard fare in the court of Henry the Eighth.

Joan Larke has heard all her young life that this is so, but she is completely unprepared to be dragged into the midst of it. Dragged she is, though, when the beautiful girl falls into the hands of the powerful and power hungry Thomas Wolsey cardinal, confidant, and finally, lord chamberlain to the king.

Wolsey knows how many secrets are passed in the bedchamber, and shamelessly enlists any woman who comes within his influence as his spy. He turns each one, under duress, into a whore who brings him information from her pillow talk with the movers and shakers of the early 16th century. But he needs love, too, and he keeps Joan to himself—for a time.

When Joan finds that she is no longer wanted and in peril of spending the rest of her life in a convent, she turns to Lady Anne Boleyn, who is rapidly supplanting Queen Catherine in Henry’s affections. But treachery is a double-edged sword, and the betrayer often becomes the betrayed in the shadowy world of Tudor court intrigue.

Although Joan has secrets of her own she can trade, in the end, she can do nothing but watch and tremble as the cardinal and the would-be queen battle behind the scenes for the love of their king, and to keep from winding up under the axe, as so many did in those dark days.

Publisher’s disclaimer The Cardinal’s Whores contains graphic sexual descriptions, along with detailed depictions of torture and death as practiced during this historical era. If you find such scenes offensive or excessively disturbing, please do not read this book.

An enjoyable, easy read with plenty of smut. Not the best thing ever, but still quite enjoyable if you're looking for some light reading. And I did stay up late to finish it!

The Cardinal Whores edition by Adrienne Blake Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Well this is cetainly not the story you get told in your history classes, but somehow i can see this being just right.
Told with the backdrop of the reign of Henry 8th, we see the Cardinal Wolsey rise to power through the use of women whom he has either caught in flagrante delicato. Told both from the women who he uses as well as himself, we see him gain the Kings ear only for it all to go not so well.

A sometime hard read due to language, but pushed through and a lovely story is told. Well done.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Cardinal's Whores is an intelligent story that kept me cycling through all of my emotions. I was crying, laughing, swooning and screaming at the characters as they connived and plotted.
The Cardinal's Whores centers around Cardinal Wolsey and his lifelong goal for power. Wolsey uses anyone who he sees as useful to him, usually because he has some sort of dirt on them. His most powerful tools are the women he meets and gets to do his bidding. His manipulations are all going well until Wolsey attempts to use the wrong young woman, the clever Anne Bolyen.
What happens next is a delightful cat and mouse game where one is always trying to get the upper hand on the other. I won't spoil it for you, but will say it will have you swiping your screen )
I connected most with Joan, Wolsey's mistress. Her own story and journey towards independence is charming and I love how she stays true to herself to the very end.
Truly a stand out, sexy, well crafted story.
This historical fiction novel delves into the gritty side of the reign of Henry the Eighth. It discusses the lives of the women that he took to bed, and what they did secretly. Joan has heard about it, but then she is dragged into the arms of Thomas Wolsey, a man who knows about the bedchamber secrets. He enlists women to be his spies, but he keeps Joan to himself. Then Joan finds out that he is just using her, and turns to Anne Boleyn, the woman who is slowly winning the heart of the king.

I don't know why society tried to romanticize the lives of the royals and nobles. This novel accurately represents how their lives were. Men would stab each other in the back constantly. Women would wait all their lives to be married off to the man that was the best for the "kingdom," just to be cheated on. How awful it must have been for those women to see children running around the castle who were from their husband's concubines, and to be unable to do anything about it. This novel also discusses that even though the priests/cardinals of the Catholic Church were not supposed to have a wife or have sexual relationships at all, they sometimes did. It doesn't even get into the fact that some of these Cardinals would trick young girls into coming into their chambers and then rape them, but this also occurred in the history of the Catholic Church. Novels can really open the eyes of the reader, and this one will definitely do so for other readers.

This isn't even considering the lives of the poor. Either they were destined to be poor and unhappy forever, or they would give themselves to a rich man for the chance at a better life. This novel is not the Disney version of royalty but is instead the cold truth.

My only complaint about this book was the plot of the story. I felt that not enough time was truly spent discussing the spy plot, and a lot of the book focused on the sexual aspects. This novel was going to have sex scenes, but I felt that the main story could have been fleshed out still.

Other than that, this entire novel was definitely an amazing ride, and I love historical fiction novels that don't try to sugar-coat the past.

I would recommend this to lovers of adult historical fiction novels that involve the truth about the royalty.

I received an advanced copy of this book from BookSprout and this is my voluntary review.
Superbly written and researched, The Cardinal's Whores is Adrienne Blake's fictionalized account of the rise and fall of Thomas Cardinal Wolsey (C. 1473-1530 AD) who was the most powerful man in England during the early foreign of Henry VIII. He was ambitious and power-hungry, and rose to prominence in both secular and religious circles thanks to a Machivellian mastery of the politics of both. Among his reputed tactics for information gathering/blackmail was the practice of introducing the men at court to women who became their mistresses - women who were Wolsey's spies. This story is told through the focus of the most well-known of those women - Joan Larke, Bessie Blount, Anne Sheffield, and both Mary and Anne Boleyn. The historical accuracy in this novel is astonishing. Telling the tale from the viewpoint of the women Wolsey used is a stroke genius. Author Blake infuses history with passion, temptation, and a sense of precarious personal safety as the women are drawn into Tudor court intrigues only to find themselves bound to a spymaster who would use them as pawns in his high-stakes chess game of power. Blake's fine characterizations put personality, emotions, and motives to the events of the time, making the story alive and personal. Vivid and detailed descriptions of the brutality and licentiousness of 16th century English nobility may offend some readers - heed the publisher's disclaimer - but I personally found it added to the realism of the novel. For those who like their historical fiction with a whopping dose of history as well as sex, romance, drama and danger, this is your book!
An enjoyable, easy read with plenty of smut. Not the best thing ever, but still quite enjoyable if you're looking for some light reading. And I did stay up late to finish it!
