I usually read cozies with female amateur sleuths, and I am not a cat lover, so I was a little hesitant to read the first book in this series. However, the reviews were good, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm now on my 3rd or 4th book in the series and plan to read until I am up to date. Charlie are Diezel are quite lovable. What I like about this series: 1. The main character is not pushy and doesn't try to outwit the police or to belittle the police. 2. Other than the murder, there is very little violence. Charlie does not end up being chased/beaten/endangered because of his nosiness (as some female protagonists do). 3. The setting is endearing. The reader feels as if he/she is part of the town. The only part of the books about which I must suspend belief is that Diezel is allowed in so many public and private buildings. Although he is a lovable feline, I'm not sure the health department would allow him in a French café. Nevertheless, the series is entertaining. I highly recommend it.

Classified as Murder Cat in the Stacks Mystery Miranda James Books Reviews

This series is one of my favorites. The writing is excellent--literate, elegant. You have to love an author and protagonist who actually inspire you to read other authors. In one of the books, the protagonist--a librarian who happens to be a man--mentions that he enjoys books by Georgette Heyer. Well, talk about your addictions! Here's a new one. Georgette Heyer is a wonderful 20th century writer. Love the Cat in the Stacks series! Now love Georgette Heyer!
This is the second book in this series of cozy mysteries. I’m a lifelong reader of mysteries and have read or tried more traditional and mystery suspense books. I switched to cozy mysteries and couple years back and find them more enjoyable. I like cozy mysteries featuring cats and I especially like the way Miranda James writes. Very easy to read, with interesting side storylines apart from the main mystery. She engages you with the characters so that it’s hard to put down because you want to keep going and finding out what happens next.
I enjoyed this cosy mystery, full of eccentric Southerners. Miranda James/Dean James can certainly write a story with charming characters that continues and doesn't just drag in the middle. A lot has been said here about the cat, Diesel. For me, he was "this close" to being too human and not cat enough, but the author seemed to know the limit. The pace is absolutely Southern. The story is sweet, but not sickeningly so. I felt, like other reviewers, that the character I know least about at the end is our narrator/protagonist, Charlie...perhaps because he's still finding himself? I will get the next in the series to see how that is progressing. I recommend this for a slow, rainy weekend or (for me) a nice book to read while recovering from a surgery. Nothing too dramatic, but a nice, steady pace that keeps you coming back for more.
I like this series because of the characters and I like cats, books, and libraries (I'm a retired teacher/librarian) so what is there is not to like. This fits nicely into the "cozy" mystery category as it does not keep you awake at night afraid after you have finished reading one but it does have enough "mystery" to keep you wondering as to "who done it"
Charlie Harris, as a part-time reference/rare book librarian working at a small college in a small town, can take his rescued Maine cat, Diesel, with him to work (in fact just about everywhere). I'm jealous of it all!
In this particular book he gets the opportunity to inventory a rich man's rare book collection in an antebellum mansion filled with an assortment of strange family members. He barely begins his work when the man is murdered. The plot continues with more murder, missing books, twists and turns, family and friends all in very interesting and descriptive settings.
Miranda James does not make Diesel into a super cat nor does she make Charlie into Sherlock Holmes but they both are very likeable and enjoyable. I also enjoy becoming more acquainted with the people in their lives and town
Once I stopped staring at "Diesel" on the cover of the book, and it did take me a long time, I found myself loving "Classified as Murder" by Miranda James.

What did I love? Well that the title tied into the storyline of the novel so well. It was about a private collection having to be classified. There were murders, of two of the characters I liked so it impacted me more harshly.

Then, there was the introduction and better understanding of the main Character's son, Sean. I enjoyed that the relationship was one that needed time and effort. I was greatly pleased in the outcome. In addition, the local policewoman is drawn deeper and we begin to see a working relationship bloom.

Charlie, the sleuth, being a male, also gives a different perspective and I find myself enjoying it. There may be a romance blooming. I enjoyed the male vantage point.

Then, there is "Diesel" who also develops and finds a new 'friend.' I love how Ms. James draws the personality and fullness of her best friend, whom happens to be a Maine Coon Cat. The inter-relationship of Diesel and Charlie is very realistic and welcoming to the reader, whom is a lover of 4-footed babies.

I actually would have given this book 7 stars. It really pleased me and I pray there will be more coming.
